NBA Staff Members Meet Congressional Staffers To Discuss Gambling

NBA employee met congressional staffers Wednesday to talk about the league ´ s relationship with sportsbooks and other matters related to the betting scandals that resulted in federal indictments of Miami guard Terry Rozier, Portland coach Chauncey Billups and others last month, two people with understanding of the talks stated.


The people, who talked to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity since information were not instantly revealed publicly, said that NBA Commissioner Adam Silver was not at the meeting, nor were any sitting members of Congress. One of individuals explained the meeting in Washington as "a fact-finding session."


It's unclear if the meeting will please demands from legislators in both your house and Senate for information from Silver about the league's betting policies and, particularly, why Rozier was cleared to play after sportsbooks flagged uncommon betting patterns surrounding his performance for a game on March 23, 2023, when he was with the Charlotte Hornets.


Sen. Ted Cruz, the Republican chairman of the Commerce Committee, and Sen. Maria Cantwell, the leading Democrat on that panel, have stated with regard to that video game including Rozier that they desire details "about how the NBA examined and dealt with these claims as well as what steps the Association is requiring to preserve the public ´ s trust."


"This Committee needs to comprehend the specifics of the NBA ´ s examination and why Rozier was cleared to continue playing basketball," Cruz and Cantwell wrote.


Federal authorities say Rozier conspired with associates to assist them win bets based upon his analytical performance in that March 2023 video game. The charges resemble what previous Toronto player Jontay Porter dealt with before he was from the league by Silver in 2024.


A Home committee also asked for detail from the NBA on a variety of matters, including "spaces, if any, in existing policies that enable illegal betting schemes to take place."
