Georgia Senate Pushes To Legalize Online Sports Betting

A newly released suggestion from the Georgia Senate Study Committee on Making Georgia the No. 1 State for Tourism might put the spotlight back on legislating online sports wagering in the Peach State.


The committee's final report prompts lawmakers to authorize mobile betting, arguing it could fresh profits and support significant occasions.


Why the Georgia Senate Committee is Urging Legalization


The tourist committee, chaired by Drew Echols, inserted the call for legal online sports wagering as a last-minute addition to its 2025 recommendations. The recommendation intends to take advantage of the growing impact of US online sportsbooks as a tool to draw visitors and fund infrastructure.


According to the report, income from mobile sports wagering might help bring in significant events such as performances and sporting competitions. Those events, in turn, could drive visitor spending across the state.


The committee indicated the example of a neighboring state, North Carolina. There, lawmakers supposedly designate around 30 percent of sports-betting earnings to tempt significant occasions. That design impressed some Georgia magnate and lawmakers as an effective blueprint to increase tourist and generate profits.


Previous Efforts and the Future of Mobile Bets


Georgia has consistently sought to establish legal sports wagering but with little success up until now. In early 2025, the state House advanced legislation (House Bill 686 and buddy House Resolution 450) that would have enabled online sports wagering controlled by the state lottery game.


Meanwhile, a separate effort through Senate Resolution 131 which looked for a constitutional amendment to permit sports betting and gambling establishment gaming. However, it failed to pass in committee earlier this year. The vote versus it stalled any possibility of a statewide referendum for 2026.


Despite these problems, the tourism-committee recommendation marks a fresh push for Georgia's betting industry. Experts and pro-gaming advocates argue that with appropriate oversight and a tax framework, controlled mobile betting could thrive. Opponents, nevertheless, continue raising issues over social expenses and addiction.


Will Online Sportsbooks Be a Reality?
